What Do Cub Pitchers Throw?

Bill James recently released The Bill James Handbook 2014.  Thirty-seven years ago, James began producing his baseball annual.  At the time he started, James’ statistical research represented the cutting edge of what would become baseball’s sabermetric movement.  In fact James himself coined the term based on the Society for American Baseball Research (“SABR”).  More advanced than ever before, James’ current book includes interesting hitting, pitching, and fielding analysis.  Looking at James’ pitching analysis, I found some interesting statistics concerning the type of pitches the Cubs’ staff throws.  I looked at all current Cub pitchers who threw at least 20 innings at the major league level last season.  Here are the results:

Fastest average fastball speed:

1. Strop 95.8
2. Samardzija 94.5
3. Arrieta 93.9

Highest percentage of fastballs thrown:

1. Rondon 68%
2. Arrieta 65%
3T. Parker 62%
3T. Strop 62%

Highest percentage of curveballs thrown:

1. Veras 32%
2. Arrieta 16%
3. Villanueva 13%

Highest percentage of sliders thrown:

1. Russell 38%
2. Strop 34%
3. Parker 32%

Highest percentage of change-ups thrown:

1. Villanueva 24%
2. Rusin 13%
3. Russell 12%

Highest percentage of cutters thrown:

1. Wood 34%
2. Rusin 25%
3. Rondon 14%

Highest percentage of splitters thrown:

1. Samardzija 17%
2. Veras 14%
3. Parker 6%
