Cubs Calendar: April 25, 1976

The Cubs fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 5 to 4 in ten innings at Chavez Ravine. Charlie Hough defeated Mike Garman despite a Cubs’ home run by Pete LaCock. Rick Monday also went three for five with a double and a run batted in for the Cubs. Despite the in-game action, this game forever will be remembered for what happened beyond the box score. As the Cubs took the field for the bottom of the fourth inning, two fans ran onto the outfield with an American flag. As the fans knelt down and doused the flag with lighter fluid, presumably to set it on fire, Monday ran toward them. According to Monday, as he approached the fans with the flag, the watched the wind blow out the first match that was lit. As the fans lit a second match, Monday grabbed the flag and carried it to safety. Check out this video of the event.
