In front of 12,013 fans at Wrigley Field, the Cubs defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 1 to 0. Greg Maddux outdueled Orel Hershiser in this crisply played one hour and 55 minute game. Maddux scattered five hits over nine innings in earning the complete game shutout victory. In addition to his pitching brilliance, Maddux also scored the game’s only run when he singled and subsequently scored on a Gary Varsho triple. Maddux finished the season with a record of 19 -12 and a 2.95 earned run average while finishing third in the National League’s Cy Young Award voting.
