The Cubs beat the San Diego Padres in game one of a double header by the score of 3 to 2. Greg Maddux earned the win for the Cubs with a complete game effort. He scattered eight hits while allowing two runs. Padre reliever Craig Lefferts suffered the loss when he surrendered a two-out walk-off home run to Cubs’ shortstop Shawon Dunston. The Padres line-up that afternoon featured a number of all-stars and future Hall of Fame players including: Roberto Alomar, Tony Gwynn, Joe Carter, Jack Clark, Fred Lynn, Benito Santiago, and Gary Templeton. On this day, however, the Padres were no match for Cubs’ starters Marvell Wynn, Doug Dascenzo, Mark Clark, and Luis Salazar. In fairness, this Cubs’ team included future Hall of Famers Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson, and Greg Maddux. Needless to say, the Cubs lost the second game of the double header.
