The Cubs were destroyed by the New York Mets 19-1 before a mere 2,503 fans at Wrigley Field. Making matters worse, the win improved the Mets’ record to a woeful 12-28 on the way to a 109 loss season. On this date, however, the Mets touched the Cubs for 19 runs on 23 hits. Cubs’ starter Bob Buhl retired only one batter while surrendering four runs. Five Cubs’ relief pitchers then combined to allow 15 more runs, including six runs given up by Don Elston in the ninth inning. Ernie Banks scored the Cubs’ sole run of the game after reaching base on a lead-off double in the fifth inning.
