The Cubs topped the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 at Wrigley Field. Long before the famous Sosa-McGwire home run race, 18,189 Cubs’ fans received an early glimpse of what was to come. After Cubs’ starter Jaime Navarro gave up four of his six runs in the top of the fourth inning, Sammy Sosa responded in the bottom of the inning by drilling a two-run home run to cut the lead in half. Down 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryne Sandberg hit a solo home run to again cut the lead in half. In the sixth inning, Sosa hit his second home run of the game to pull the Cubs to within two runs. Following a rousing rendition of Take Me Out to the Ballgame, the Cubs scored two more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead 7-6. Sosa capped the inning with another two-run home run to give the Cubs a three-run cushion. Turk Wendell pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning to save the game for the Cubs’ winning pitcher Terry Adams.
