Cubs Calendar: June 26, 1972

The Cubs clobbered the Philadelphia Phillies 11-1 in front of 14,363 Cubs fans at Wrigley Field. In his first ever major league start, rookie pitcher Rick Reuschel threw a complete game to earn the win. Reuschel scattered six hits and allowed only one run while striking out six Phillies’ batters. The Cubs scored early and often in this game. Rick Monday hit a home run and scored three runs. Paul Popovich added three hits while Don Kessinger, Jim Hickman, Ron Santo, and Randy Hundley each collected two hits. The win improved the Cubs’ record to 35-26 and moved them within four games of first place.
