Cubs Calendar: July 21, 2003

On their way to winning the National League Central Division, the Cubs humiliated the Atlanta Braves 15-6 at Turner Field. Cubs’ starter Shawn Estes struggled early in the game, surrendering five runs on three home runs to the Braves in just three innings. Through four innings, the Cubs trailed the Braves 5-4, despite Sammy Sosa’s early three-run home run and run scoring single. In the fifth inning, Alex Gonzalez hit a two-run home run to give the Cubs the lead for good against Shane Reynolds and the Braves. On the day, Cubs’ centerfielder Tom Goodwin rapped five hits and scored four runs. Moises Alou added four hits and drove in five runs. Sosa and Gonzalez each had three hits with Sosa driving in four runs and Gonzalez driving in three. The win pulled the Cubs to within three and a half games of the division lead.
