The Cubs outlasted the Cincinnati Reds in this wild night game played in front of 34,458 fans at Wrigley Field. Future Cubs’ closer Randy Myers started for the Reds, but lasted only five innings and picked up the loss. Les Lancaster gave up three runs in seven and a third innings to secure the win for the Cubs. Paul Assenmacher finished the game to collect the save. The Cubs’ hits leaders were none other than Chico Walker, Andre Dawson, Luis Salazar, and Rick Wilkins with two each. For the Reds, Chris Sabo blasted two solo home runs in the losing effort.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, home plate umpire Joe west called Dawson out on strikes on a pitch low and away. Dawson argued the call, words were exchanged, West tossed Dawson from the game, and Dawson erupted in an uncharacteristic fit of anger. One inning later, with the Cubs ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Doug Dascenzo laid down a perfect suicide squeeze bunt. In frustration, Reds’ pitcher Rob Dibble intentionally threw the ball at Dascenzo’s legs as the runner approached first base. Dibble immediately was ejected after the play. After the Reds changed pitchers, Cubs’ second baseman Ryne Sandberg drove a single to left field to add an insurance run and tag Dibble with his third run of the inning.
