The Cubs fell to the New York Mets 9-8 in ten innings before 20,474 fans at Wrigley Field. Starting pitcher Ray Burris lasted seven innings, but not before allowing seven runs on ten hits in the process. The Cubs’ offense kept the team in the game with home runs from Rick Monday and Jerry Morales. Bill Madlock led the Cubs’ scoring efforts by going six for six and driving in three runs. For the season, Madlock hit .354 and won the first of his two National League batting titles with the Cubs. Unfortunately, a Joe Torre single off of Cubs’ relief pitcher Oscar Zamora gave the Mets the lead for good in the top of the tenth inning.
