Cubs Calendar: July 27, 1979

The Cubs doubled up the New York Mets 4-2 at Shea Stadium. Dave Kingman gave the Cubs an early lead with a solo home run. After the Mets tied the game at one, Ivan deJesus doubled home Ted Sizemore to give the Cubs the lead. In the ninth inning, Kingman hit a two-run blast for his second home run of the day. Starter Lynn McGlothen pitched over six innings and allowed only one run. Relief pitcher Dick Tidrow picked up his tenth win of the season in relief and closer Bruce Sutter recorded his 23rd save of the year while lowering his earned run average to 1.25. The win gave the Cubs a record of 54-42 and moved the team to within half a game of first place.
