The Cubs swept a doubleheader from the Philadelphia Phillies 5-4 and 8-6 at Wrigley Field. Cubs’ starter Paul Minner outdueled Robin Roberts in the opener, but relief pitcher Bob Kelly finished the game and grabbed the win. Down 4-3 in the eighth inning, Cubs’ player-manager Phil Cavarretta hit a sacrifice fly out to tie the game. Cubs’ left fielder Gene Hermanski hit a walk off ground out to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. In the afternoon game, Cubs’ pitcher Dutch Leonard picked up the win in relief of starter Bob Rush. With the game tied at four in the bottom of the seventh inning, Robin Roberts (pitching in his second game of the day) allowed a grand slam to Cubs’ player-manager Cavarretta that put the Cubs ahead for good.
