Cubs Calendar: July 30, 1989

The Cubs defeated the New York Mets 6-4 in dramatic fashion at Wrigley Field. The Cubs excited the game’s 36,837 fans with four early runs. Andre Dawson drove in a run with a sacrifice fly out, Lloyd McClendon drove in a run on a bases loaded walk, and Shawon Dunston hit a solo home run. Dunston scored the team’s fourth run on a sacrifice fly out hit by National League Rookie of the Year Jerome Walton. Cubs’ starting pitcher Mike Bielecki gave up four runs in just under seven innings of work and left with the game tied at four. Les Lancaster pitched two and one third scoreless innings and collected the victory when the Cubs’ rallied to win the game in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and Walton on second base, Cubs’ first baseman Mark Grace launched a walk-off home run to deep right field off of future Cubs’ closer Randy Myers.
