The Cubs edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in twelve innings at Wrigley Field in front of 31,280 fans. Cubs’ starting pitcher Steve Trachsel pitched seven strong innings and surrendered only two runs on a pair of Raul Mondesi home runs. Four Cubs’ relief pitchers combined to allow one run over five innings. The Cubs found themselves trailing 2-1 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Sammy Sosa doubled in Doug Glanville to tie the game. Following Sosa’s clutch hit, neither team scored over the next three innings. Light hitting Dodgers’ shortstop Greg Gagne led off the top of the twelfth inning with a home run off Cubs’ closer Mel Rojas. Down 3-2 with two outs in the bottom of the twelfth inning, mark grace drew a walk off of Dodgers’ closer Todd Worrell. After working the count full, the next batter, Sosa, knocked a two- run home run into the bleachers to give the Cubs the dramatic victory.
