Cubs Calendar: August 9, 2001

The Cubs fell to the Colorado Rockies 14-5 at Wrigley Field in front of 38,345 fans. Cubs’ starting pitcher Julian Tavarez lasted less than three innings while allowing five runs. Relief pitcher Felix Heredia faired even worse as he surrendered six runs while retiring only four batters. Rockies’ starter Mike Hampton cruised to victory behind his team’s offensive outburst. The lone bright spot for the Cubs came in the form of three Sammy Sosa home runs – giving him forty total on the year. Despite the lopsided outcome of this game, 2001 became the winningest Cubs’ season since 1989. The Cubs finished in third place in the ultra-competitive National League Central Division with a record of 88-74.
