Cubs Calendar: August 11, 1989

On their way to a divisional title, the first place Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-2 in front of 36,440 fans at Wrigley Field. Greg Maddux allowed two runs over seven innings to grab his fourteenth win of the season. Phillies’ starter Don Carmen lasted less than five innings and allowed seven earned runs. Andre Dawson and Ryne Sandberg both hit home runs for the Cubs. Sandberg’s bomb was his the fifth home run in his last five games tying Stan Hack for the team’s all-time record. Sandberg drove in three runs on the day while Jerome Walton and Shawon Dunston each knocked in two runs.
