Cubs Calendar: August 15, 1989

The Cubs defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-2 in twelve innings at Riverfront Stadium. Starting pitcher Greg Maddux allowed only two runs over eight innings, but did not factor in the decision. Instead, closer Mitch Williams pitched two scoreless innings to get his second win of the year. Despite an early home run by Dwight Smith and a three hit performance by Vance Law, the Cubs struggled to score in this contest. In the top of the twelfth inning, Andre Dawson came to bat with two runners on base and two outs. Dawson drove a 2-2 pitch to deep left field for the go-ahead three-run home run. The win bettered the first place Cubs’ record to 69-50.
