On the heels of a four game losing streak, the Cubs won a much needed victory over the Cincinnati Reds 9-2. Sammy Sosa hit his fifty-second home run of the season and Gary Gaetti collected three hits and drove in four runs to lift the Cubs’ offense. Starting pitcher Kerry Wood threw eight innings and allowed only one earned run on three hits. Wood struck out sixteen Reds’ batters in the contest while throwing one hundred and thirty-three pitches. The win began a stretch of nine wins in ten games that propelled the Cubs into position to secure the National League Wild Card.
