In game one of a doubleheader, the Cubs beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-5 at Wrigley Field. Cubs’ starting pitcher and four-time All-Star, Dutch Leonard, came one out away from a complete game, but still earned the victory. Another four-time All-Star, Johnny Vander Meer, came on in relief and walked two batters before recording the final out to pick up the save. Offensively, Hank Sauer led the Cubs with three home runs. Sauer went three for three in the game and drove in four runs. Light hitting second baseman Wayne Terwilliger added a solo home run to boost the Cubs’ scoring efforts. Due to performances like the one he had on this day, Hank Sauer later was voted the National League’s Most Valuable Player in 1952.
