Cubs Calendar: August 29, 1989

The Boys of Zimmer rallied from nine runs down to earn an improbable tenth-inning 10-9 victory over the Houston Astros. Cubs’ pitchers Mike Bielecki and Dean Wilkins surrendered nine runs through the game’s first five innings to put the team in a hole. On this sunny Wrigley Field day, 25,829 fans saw a miraculous Cubs’ finish. In the bottom of the sixth, Shawon Dunston and Domingo Ramos each tallied run scoring singles to cut the deficit to 9-2. A seventh inning two-run home run by Lloyd McClendon and a Dwight Smith single to drive in Mark Grace yielded three more runs. Back-to-back-to-back run scoring singles by Ryne Sandberg, McClendon, and Grace along with a Smith sacrifice fly out tied the game in the eighth inning. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Astros’ closer Dave Smith walked Jerome Walton, allowed a McClendon single, and intentionally walked Grace to load the bases. With one out, Smith drove a single into right field to win the game for the Cubs. While Joe Girardi, Sandberg, and McClendon each collected three hits, McClendon and Smith led the team with three runs batted in apiece. The Cubs improved their record to 75-57 to maintain a two and a half game lead on the division.
