The Cubs defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-1 before 32,429 fans at Wrigley Field. Starting pitcher Jim Bullinger, in his third major league start, recorded a one-hit complete game to earn his second career win. Bullinger carried a no-hitter into the top of the eighth inning when Giant catcher Kirt Manwaring hit a solo home run for the team’s only hit on the day. The Cubs scored on a Luis Salazar sacrifice fly out, a Doug Dascenzo single, and a Mark Grace home run. The win pushed the Cubs to three games over .500 and left their slim playoff chances intact. SIDENOTE: As an attendee at this game, I remember the great optimism that Cubs’ fans had regarding Bullinger. Manwaring crushed the pitch that he took out of the park, but it was one of only four home runs that he hit all season.
