Cubs Calendar: August 31, 1960

In game one of a doubleheader, the Cubs edged the Milwaukee Braves 5-4 in ten innings. Dick Ellsworth started the game for the Cubs and threw eight innings while allowing four runs on three home runs. Down 4-3 with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, Don Zimmer faced Braves’ starter Lew Burdette and drove a home run deep into the right field bleachers to tie the game. With Burdette still in the game and two outs in the tenth inning, Bob Will hit a walk-off home run to win the game for the Cubs. After Ellsworth left the game, Don Elston came on in relief and threw two scoreless innings to earn the win. Future Braves’ Hall of Famers Hank Aaron and Eddie Matthews combined to go only 1-9 in the game while Cubs’ Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Ron Santo were 0-7.
