Cubs Calendar: September 1, 1978

The cubs outlasted the Houston Astros 14-11 before 16,117 fans at Wrigley Field. While Cubs’ starter Mike Krukow lasted less than two innings, Houston ace pitcher J.R. Richard gave up eight runs in less than four innings. The Cubs hit four home runs in the game at the hands of Bobby Murcer, Manny Trillo, Dave Rader, and Bill Buckner. In addition to his home run, Buckner added two doubles and drove in four runs on the day. Murcer and Dave Kingman each drove in two runs too. Bruce Sutter came on in relief in the seventh inning and recorded the last seven outs to earn his twenty-fourth save of the season. The win put the Cubs two games above .500 on the season.
