Cubs Calendar: September 8, 1977

The Cubs defeated the Montreal Expos 3-2 at Wrigley Field in front of 2,841 raucous fans. Cubs’ starting pitcher Ray Burris threw six innings and allowed only two runs while Expos’ starter Steve Rogers threw five scoreless frames. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Many Trillo drove in a run with a single and Jose Cardenal scored another runner when Larry Parrish booted a ground ball booted for an error. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Bill Buckner hit a sacrifice fly out to score Dave Rossello with the game’s winning run. Cubs’ reliever Bruce Sutter pitched the final three innings of the game to earn his sixth victory on the season. At one point, Sutter struck out six consecutive Expos – Warren Cromartie, Andre Dawson, Tony Perez, Ellis Valentine, Gary Carter, and Larry Parrish – that included three future Hall of Fame inductees.
